Painting Lulu with Chicky

Today we are bringing you a really neat, new concept with the Paper-to-Digital Colouring Pack from Painting Lulu. I’m thrilled to be able to feature Chicky in a review again. It’s been so long that, the last time she was in one, she was modelling diapers and not in the least bit impressed. If you’re cloth diapering, or you just want to see a cute baby, you can check out the Glow Bug review here and a Piddly Winx one here.

Anyway! We received their My Little Pony kit free, in exchange for this review, and both of my girls have been making use of the 32 colouring pages included.

Paper to Digital Colouring Pack

Photo from Painting Lulu

What’s incredibly cool about the Painting Lulu colouring book is that your little ones can make a picture on the paper, then transfer it to Apple, Android or Amazon devices and continue their artwork via digital medium. This comes in handy if you’re heading out the car and want to avoid a melted crayon fiasco. Believe me, it’s rough and it happens. Last year my kiddoes took one SMALL package of crayons in our van, while on the trip up north, and I ended up with a backseat absolutely full of colourful streaks that were completely impossible to remove. Here I was thinking I was such an ingenious Mama, coming up with cute backseat fun kits that would keep them occupied during our 5 hour drive, and I inadvertently ruined the upholstery in our vehicle. Thankfully, I no longer have to worry about that (and we have since purchased a new van- yay for Honda and my man Nelson!).

As soon as I received the Painting Lulu colouring book in the mail, I had to hide it away, up high, so that they couldn’t tear it open. It was an instant hit because what girl doesn’t like My Little Pony and what kid doesn’t want to colour? For at least five minutes before they try to take the crayon to the wall anyway- I know what’s up, I’ve got boys too.

Here’s a great video to show you what it’s all about.

Chicky was SO excited to get started. For her, she loves the pictures of all of her favourite characters and she thinks the “squishy” crayon is the best. She’s actually carried it around since using it the first time, in order to keep it away from her big sister.

As a Mum, I like the quick share options and the idea that I can upload their artwork to Facebook, in order to put it in their online scrapbooks. I can also easily share it with family and friends that may not otherwise get to see her art, just in case anyone wants an original Chicky piece on their fridge. Gramma can take some of our overstock, no doubt.

If you want to try before you buy, check out the Painting Lulu website and find their free sample page by clicking this link. If you know now that your children, or the littles in your life, will love this as much as mine do, scoop it on Amazon below. By using my affiliate link to purchase, you’re buying a great gift in time for the holidays and you’re also supporting this Mama’s bloggy endeavors. Thank you!

Views of Thing 2

I have done a couple of questionnaires with the children, which you can find here and here, and I’ve finally gotten some time alone with my stepson in order to make him part of this series too. I plan to ask the children these questions once in a while, tracking their changes and views on life. Here’s a picture of Thing 2 and below are his responses;

1. If you could live in a house shaped like anything, what would it be?
I’m going to say, like, a few squares.
2. What do you think is in outer space?
Something that goes on forever.
3. Where is the most wonderful place you’ve ever been?
Zooz. I liked the Sky Quest. And here.
4. What are you good at?
Art, studying animals and rocks;  I do study them.
5. What’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you?
I don’t know. “You got 100%” or something like that, in school.
6. What are you most proud of?
I’m proud of school and some project that I studied on the otter. I really liked that.
7. If you were invisible for a day, what would you do?
Eat lots of candy, I think, and stay up all night.
8. What is the worst smell in the world?
(lots of laughter) My brother, farting.
9. What do you want to be when you grow up?
Geologist… or one of those people from Marineland that do the things with the dolphins- I want to do that, with otters instead.
10. What makes you cry?
If my brother’s mean, or other people are mean.
(As a side note, he had just cried because Thing 1 attacked his guy in Minecraft)
11. Were there dinosaurs on Noah’s ark?
Uhm, no.
12. What are you scared of?
Roller coasters.
13. If you could mix any animals, what two animals would you combine?
The shark and the horse. I just think it would be funny… Or the body of a tick and the head of a dog.
14. Who is your hero?
My Dad and my brother- No real reason, just because it’s nice and because they’re people who I do things with and look up to. They always help me.
15. What is your favorite song?
Get Lucky by Daft Punk.
16. What is a friend?
A friend is someone who looks out for me and, if we have a fight, someone who will always come back. They help me do things.
17. What is your favourite memory?
When we were at the cottage, I liked going fishing and swimming together and going out for dinner at that really, really, really good place. I loved the french fries.
18. If you could be any animal, what type of animal would you be?
An otter because they pretty much get to do whatever they want.
19. Who is your best friend?
Maitland.
20. What is your favorite thing to do with family?
Go out for a few days, like go camping or to the cottage, or something like that.
21. What is the most important rule?
Always help people in need, or help clean up.
22. If you had a million dollars, what would you spend it on?
A house and a bunch of animals.
23. Why do people get old?
They’ve had a whole year of life, so you just get older. They get wrinkly and stuff because they’re just growing too much skin and it’s crinkling up. Your skin gets thinner and thinner so your veins start to show too.
24. What is love?
I have no idea. How many questions are there? We’re just halfway?!
Oh boy, okay…
When people get together, they eventually start liking each other and they do all these activities together, then they fall in love. It’s when two people spend all of their time together, then move in together and they get married. That’s all I’ve thought about it.
25. If your pet could talk, what would it say?
“Hello. I love you, let’s play! Take me for a walk. What do you want to do? I’m hungry- could I please have some water?”.
26. If you had super powers, what would they be?
To crawl through a computer and then be in a different place or on a different planet. Oh- and to make things float, with mind control. And splashing water at people out of NOWHERE!
27. What’s the best thing about being a kid?
You get a lot of free time and you don’t normally have to take care of anyone a lot. You also don’t have to do as much work as adults do, or even go to work. You get to just stay at home for the whole day. That’s all I’ve got.

28. Why do people have different colour skin?
Um, because of the sun- people who live where it’s really, really hot out have darker skin. People who have light skin, like white skin, have it because they don’t need the dark skin because it’s not going to be super hot and it’s not going to be really cold. Sometimes where it’s really cold, people have darker skin too… just not super dark.
29. Who is someone in history that you’d like to be friends with? Why?
Someone in Vancouver, like if they were still a kid- My Papa Dale, if he was still a kid. He’s really fun and always goes fishing with me, teaches me how to cast and helps me pull out fish too. He would be a fun friend to have. That’s all I’ve got.
30. What makes you happy when you’re sad?
My family because they always cheer me up and tell me that we’re doing exciting things together.
31. Do you have a lucky number? Why is it lucky to you?
58. It’s lucky because, whenever they tell me to pick a number between 1-100, it’s mostly a winning one and it’s an even number.
32. If you could be president for the day, what would you do?
I would tell people what to do and, uhm, make them build new houses for orphans to live in. I would make people have to adopt more orphans, to give them families so they can live nicely.

33. What is something that you don’t understand about grownups?
They always get to eat candy whenever they want and get to do whatever they want, pretty much. They get to do fun things and go to parties by themselves or have alone time, like at my other house- I don’t understand that.
34. What is the greatest thing ever invented?
The phone, the computer, a house, ovens and TVs.  I can’t pick between all of those.
35. Have you ever played a joke on someone? What was it?
Once, my mother and I coloured on my brother’s face when he was sleeping to get him back for drawing on me. He had glasses and a moustache.
36. What do you think is the most important appliance or piece of furniture in your house?
The oven or stove.
37. What is your favorite word? Why?
My favourite word is “boom-boom” because it’s fun to say.
38. If you had your own country, what would it be called?
Um, Fishland, with fish everywhere.
39. What do you dream about when you sleep?
Scary things…no, wait… fun things mostly, like wave pools and going to the waterpark.
40. If you were in a band, what instrument would you play? Why?
The trumpet because I really like the sound and they’re kind of soothing. They’re really fun to play and it’s kind of like a flute- I already know how to play the flute.
41. What 3 words would you use to describe our family?
Fun, lucky and polite.
42. What’s something you’d like to learn how to do?
Um, fly!
43. If you had to give away all of your toys but one, which one would you keep?
I’m going to say the Xbox.
44. What do you think Heaven is like?
White, with lots of clouds and it’s peaceful.
45. What is something that you’re thankful for?
My life, my family and my pets.
46. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever had to do?
Going on a roller coaster. That’s what I answered on the “What are you afraid of?” question, because it was really hard to do because it gives you this really weird feeling. It feels like your skin is going on the back of your face- and I don’t like fast rides. You know that weird feeling that you feel when you’re on a roller coaster- I don’t like that, it’s what scares me.
47. Do you think that telling the truth is always right, even if it hurts someone’s feelings?
Yes.
48. If you could change one thing about me, what would it be?
Not having that sickness thing with your heart, I don’t want you to have that.
49. What’s the greatest thing about being you?
I always get my way.
50. If you could fix any one thing about the world, what problem would you fix first?
I would make sure there were no more tornadoes or things like that happening.

If you end up using this questionnaire, feel free to shoot me your link. I would love to see what your own children come up with!

An Interview With Thing 1

I recently came across a fun questionnaire for children on the CrayonFreckles site and, with the exception of a few questions (I swapped some of hers out for some of my own), I used her outline to interview my oldest son. I had to change a couple of things to be more age appropriate, as my son’s already aware of how babies are made, and I wanted to change out a few of the more religious questions. I’m so glad that I did this- although it’s an easy questionnaire and doesn’t take much time, I discovered things that I didn’t know about my child and this has made me feel so much closer to him. I teared up a couple of times, listening to him talk, and he teared up during one of these. He’s heading to an age where it’ll be a lot more difficult to speak to him for any length of time so, while he’s still receptive, I’m so thrilled to have taken this time with him.
Be sure to check out the site mentioned above for a great printable, in case you want to ask your own wee ones!
1. If you could live in a house shaped like anything, what would it be?
That’s kinda tricky. I would say, a big house, with lots of land and just squares and rectangles.
2. What do you think is in outer space?
Stars. Planets and then, far beyond all of the planets, there are other galaxies….probably with other life.
3. Where is the most wonderful place you’ve ever been?
Canada’s Wonderland. I like it more than the cottage because nothing really exciting happened at the cottage. Well, we tipped a canoe but…
My favourite thing about Canada’s Wonderland was all of the rides and Ethan flipping out on the rollercoaster.
4. What are you good at?
I’m good at learning different languages. I’m good at sports and I’m good at helping others.
5. What’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you?
Hmm. I don’t know. Wait, are these questions necessary? Probably something you’ve said.
6. What are you most proud of?
I’m proud of the fact I’ve started a job and that I’ve raised lots of money for charity- and that I will help people when they need help.
7. If you were invisible for a day, what would you do?
You don’t want to know!
I would probably play tons of tricks on people, or get all of the money from a bank… but, I mean, I’m never going to be invisible.
8. What is the worst smell in the world?
Wet socks. Ones I’ve worn after gym class.
9. What do you want to be when you grow up?
Whatever is going to make me lots of money.
10. What makes you cry?
When I saw that you guys were sad when I was about to have my surgery. Like, seeing the people I love being really sad.
11. Were there dinosaurs on Noah’s ark?
Uh, I don’t think there were dinosaurs. I did see the movie but, uh, I don’t think so.
12. What are you scared of?
The unknown.
(answered straight away)
13. If you could mix any animals, what two animals would you combine?
A cheetah mixed with a bear. It would be strong and fast.
(As a side note, I’m so glad he didn’t say “bulldog and shihtzhu”- that’s totally what I was expecting)
14. Who is your hero?
Probably you or Dad. Mainly you though ’cause I think that you are very smart and you know how to manage things. You hold everyone together and do fun things.
15. What is your favorite song?
One Republic- Counting Stars (he could only name the lyrics to it).
16. What is a friend?
A friend is someone that you can count on, for your secrets- someone you trust.
17. What is your favourite memory?
(after a lot of thought)
When I got the Dad I never had. There’s lots of memories from when Ethan and I played together, or getting to have tiny siblings because I’ll get to have nephews and nieces. I would say the best one was getting to have a Dad though because mine left me.
18. If you could be any animal, what type of animal would you be?
I like tigers and bears but I would say I’d like to be a tiger because they’re going extinct…so if I was one then maybe I could help protect the tiger existence.
19. Who is your best friend?
Um, well I guess I’m popular. I had two schools here so I have friends from there and from the new school too. I can’t really choose my best friend because I have tons of them but, if I have to, then I would say Cole, Jaren and Dylan are my best ones. And Hayden too. Those are all of my best ones and I can’t choose just one. There’s also Lucas- and then that would probably be it.
20. What is your favorite thing to do with family?
Go on a walk, or go to the beach…something outdoors-like.
21. What is the most important rule?
Don’t go out without your parents.
22. If you had a million dollars, what would you spend it on?
I would do things for people that don’t have a lot of food. I would use some for my family and I too, going on a big trip and getting a good-sized house.
23. Why do people get old?
I don’t know, I’m not a scientist! You’ve gotta do *something*. That’s the way we were made- if we don’t get old then we can’t grow up, have kids and families. I don’t have a big theory, that’s just the way we were made.
24. What is love?
Why are you asking me such weird questions?! It’s when two people have strong feelings for eachother and they decide to be with one another, to have a family together and to stay together for their lives. That’s what I think love is.
25. If your pet could talk, what would it say?
Ben, you’re a sonofa—-
Don’t write that. Mom…alright, whatever. She would say, “I need to be fed. I want to go to the washroom. Pay attention to me!” She would just give us orders and ask for things, like Charlii does.
26. If you had super powers, what would they be?
Super strength and super speed. I would also have super intelligence and, I guess, why not- to fly!
27. What’s the best thing about being a kid?
That you don’t have to pay for your bills or make your own food and you don’t have to buy your own house. You don’t have to take care of yourself and you don’t have any kids to deal with, unless you’re an older sibling like myself. Sometimes you can sit back and play a videogame or just play outside and take a bike ride. Plus, you always have family there to help you make decisions and help you get through things but, if you’re a grown up, you have to make your own decisions.
And can I add another answer the question before this? I would read minds too.
28. Why do people have different colour skin?
Um, because some choose to stay inside and that makes them very pale- I don’t know why though. Some people are just born that way. I don’t know the story but there were two groups of people and they split up- there was a black side and a white side and I don’t know how to tell it but some got lighter because of where we live, I think? I don’t know. These questions are hard.
29. Who is someone in history that you’d like to be friends with? Why?
Oh! Um, Stephen Hawking! I’d like to be friends with him or Albert Einstein…or any great inventor or mathematician. They could help me with my homework, help me construct things and, if I hang out with them a lot, then I would become smarter too.
30. What makes you happy when you’re sad?
When I get sad that I may die some day, I try to think of the present and live life for today. I’ll just distract myself if I’m sad in general, with something else to do.
31. Do you have a lucky number? Why is it lucky to you?
Eight. It’s lucky because, when I was 8, I got a soccer jersey with my age on it and it was my favourite number for the whole year. After that, it kind of just stuck with me.
32. If you could be president for the day, what would you do?
I would eliminate electricity or water bills. I would start to pay the country $100 towards grocery costs for families that might need it. I would try to get it so that school work is done in schools and not at home.
33. What is something that you don’t understand about grownups?
Love. For sure, it’s just really confusing to me.
34. What is the greatest thing ever invented?
I would say electricity, being found and used to power so many things. It gives us light and electricity is related to technology- I just think it’s all really cool.
35. Have you ever played a joke on someone? What was it?
Yeah, I’ve played many jokes! I joked that my friend’s girlfriend liked me…and set it up with the whole class. Everyone was in on it and he believed it but then we obviously told him it was just a joke.
I also drew on my brother’s face while he was sleeping. Twice.
36. What do you think is the most important appliance or piece of furniture in your house?
Our kitchen….The stove!
37. What is your favorite word? Why?
I’d say “stuff” because it gets me out of lots of things that I didn’t want to say.
38. If you had your own country, what would it be called?
Funland. Only because B.C. is already a place.
39. What do you dream about when you sleep?
Most of the time I don’t have any dreams but, when I do, it’s a nightmare. One time I had a nightmare that we were walking on a bridge and the girls fell off when I wasn’t looking. They were swept under the water and you and Dad jumped in after them. Then it was just Ethan and I. Before the dream ended, his jaw opened wide open and his face turned into stone. Then he fell apart…and then I woke up.
40. If you were in a band, what instrument would you play? Why?
The drums because I like the beat and I like  how, when you whack all of them at the same time, or really fast, it creates a very unique sound. Most of my favourite songs have lots of drums in them.
41. What 3 words would you use to describe our family?
Silly, weird and awesome.
42. What’s something you’d like to learn how to do?
Karate and  to also learn how to conquer my fears.
43. If you had to give away all of your toys but one, which one would you keep?
 Probably my wooden axe.
44. What do you think Heaven is like?
Um, I don’t really believe that you go to Heaven. I think, if it is real, I picture it being very bright and anything you want, you get. I believe in reincarnation though so I think we just come back. Maybe you could just have a choice though and go to Heaven instead. It’s hard though because no one really knows.
45. What is something that you’re thankful for?
I am thankful for a family that cooks my meals, puts up with me and gives me a good future- if that makes any sense.
46. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever had to do?
I can’t remember lots but I’d say controlling my feelings and moving away from one of the house I liked and one of the schools I liked.
47. Do you think that telling the truth is always right, even if it hurts someone’s feelings?
No.
48. If you could change one thing about me, what would it be?
Um, you stop keeping me inside sometimes and I just go wherever I want to go, whenever.
49. What’s the greatest thing about being you?
(jokingly says)
I’m kinda balanced because girls love me, only sometimes they’re way over-the-moon…. only my Nana is allowed to be over-the-moon in love with me. Seriously though, the greatest thing is that I have a home and food. Many families don’t have that.
50. If you could fix any one thing about the world, what problem would you fix first?
To help all families in the world love each other, get along and be happy- everywhere.
If you end up using this questionnaire, feel free to shoot me your link. I would love to see what your own children come up with!

Intelligent Nutrients, Not Just for Geniuses.

Hey you! Glad to see you on the page and here’s what I have to show you today, my find of the season;

This is the Intelligent Nutrients Bug Repellent Perfume Spray, which I was sent to review,  and I was absolutely thrilled with this product for a variety of reasons.
I have been hunting around for an organic bug repellent for ages and had either very little luck with effectiveness or an oily, stinky and poor experience. My homemade mosquito repellent, admittedly, did not work nearly as well and was not as strongly-scented as this one either. The Intelligent Nutrients one smells like peppermint and cloves, as far as I am concerned, and my hubby thinks it smells “like an herb garden”. It’s not offensive, like many commercial products, and is gender neutral in aroma- always an important thing for two, little boys who believe smelling the least bit floral is the equivalent to being put in a dress.

What is important for me though, and a pleasant surprise, is that it works to help ward off ticks, gnats, flies, aunts and mosquitoes! We took it up north to Muskoka, where the bugs were so bad that going outside meant you were putting yourself up as feast for dozens of mosquitoes at once, and I used it every day. This picture was taken about five seconds after spraying it on and, as you can see, there’s no oily film or absorption issues and I found it left my skin quite soft. The sensation is pleasantly cooling and I believe that is due to the peppermint.

We were also provided with the handy, little pocket-appropriate bug serum;
https://www.intelligentnutrients.ca/shop/certified-organic-bug-repellent-serum
Both products smell exactly alike, only the serum is more oily and I found it was perfect for massaging on our youngest child. She loved the snuggly bonding time and it was a great moisturizer, on top of being an effective mosquito repellent.

My husband, like most any normal human being, hates bugs and thought that our OFF Family Care would be more effective due to the Deet content and the reputation. The boys, wanting to be like their father, opted to wear the same spray until we compared bug bites at the end of the night and the boys ended up with a lot more than the girls. The Deep Woods version is the only one that compared but I was not pleased with the boys using the less harsh Family formula, let alone that, and the only one who wore it was my husband.
The spray was my top choice of the two but I really liked the oily serum for in a diffuser, which I use on my front porch now. I can genuinely say that Intelligent Nutrients makes the best natural mosquito repellent that I have used to date and highly recommend the product!

I was also sent their Harmonic shampoo and conditioner combo and, although I do not normally review sample size items, I decided to take these away with me as well. They are the perfect travel sized bottles;

Much like the bug spray, there is an herbaceous undertone to the shampoo and the peppermint is prevalent, as well as cooling on the scalp. I love hair care products that include mint and have become somewhat addicted to the sensation- It’s so refreshing! My only complaint about this product is the packaging- the bottles are very stiff and it leads to the whole harsh shake, wiggle and squeeze to try and get the shampoo out. It would be fantastic if they were in soft tubes, or if the shampoo and conditioner came out easier.

I found the scent to be slightly more masculine, in my opinion, and loved the smell of it in my husband’s thick, beautiful hair after he showered. The conditioner is moisturizing but not overly greasy and rinses very cleanly away. All in all, I had a pleasant experience with this where scent and sensation were concerned.

Last, but not least, is the certified organic sanitizer;

It is always difficult to find a sanitizing product that is free of parabens, sulfates, silicones, harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances but this one contains none of those while still remaining 99% effective at killing germs. I found this to dry incredibly quickly and it was initially very pungent where the alcohol scent was concerned, then it quickly died down to smell a bit like vanilla and pumpkin. My husband said that the scent reminded him of Trix cereal, for some reason. He’s a strange man. What I liked most about this product was the fact that it came as a spray, not a runny liquid that you can squirt into your palm, and is therefore more difficult for children to use. I like the idea that my toddler will not get into this as easily as she could a bottle of the gel, although I would never leave her unattended around something like this anyways. An extra precaution, however, is always a bonus. I also like the spray for toting around in a purse, as it is less likely to leak and comes with the additional cap to put on top. Very handy.

Intelligent Nutrients was a company that I had not previously heard of and, upon discovering that they carry such a wide variety of Certified Organic health and beauty products, I am so very pleased to have come across them. If you want to find out more information for yourself, please check out their website here and stay tuned for a future review of their Renewal Complex Eye Gel this month!
