Ultimate Up”cycling” with Flat Bags

Hello again, me here- And up there too! That’s my Flat Bag under my arm and it doubles as a purse, diaper bag or laptop carry case. It looks good enough that I wanted to do this whole post for a Wordless Wednesday, as the pictures are review enough (in my mind) but there is so much to this neat, little creation that I wanted to “Dish” about it with you a bit!

Flat Bags are the brain child of Shannon Hames, an avid mountain biker from British Columbia, Canada, who made the first purse using old inner tubes and splash pants in 1996. At least something worthwhile came from horrible 90s fashion mistakes, I suppose you could say- Sorry Shannon! ūüėõ

The company is now responsible for making fantastic, environmentally friendly fashion statements out of over 16 000 feet of inner tubes to date. They have also graduated beyond raingear to this lovely, leather-like, white creation that you see before you;

The above picture features the Large Favourite in Pearl, which has two inner pockets and a zippered pocket on the back. The back compartment actually has enough room that it can store the smaller purse shown below, or as part of my outfit in this Echo Verde review. Having a lot of space is great for me, as I carry a full sized hairbrush for out of control locks, have more keys than makes sense, I need to bring things to amuse my boys or else they’ll kill one another, I’m Peanut’s Little People mule, we have a ton of baby items in tow at all times, I need food about every two hours because I am a huge pig and I carry a honkin’, old lady wallet- so bonus!

The purse fastens closed by two magnetic snaps, which I found very fun to use, and the shoulder strap is similar to a seatbelt so it’s far more comfortable than what a typical bag would offer. I hate those straps that dig into my traps when I’m toting all that I do but this one is wide enough that it doesn’t- plus, it has an additional pad included for my shoulder as an added comfort feature.

Of course, Peanut got straight into the parcel as soon as I opened it and she took a liking to the larger of the two purses. As it looked ridiculous (and made me a bit jealous) I gave her the little one to sport around. Hopefully she will tote her own Little People but, as of right now, her purse includes one of my chapsticks, a box of Smarties, a Cinderella necklace that belongs to her sister, a crumpled picture of herself, a fridge magnet, a play syringe from her doctor kit and one Oreo. I’m not sure if this is really cute or if I should be concerned that my daughter may turn out to be a drug addict, narcissist, kleptomaniac, thief or a diabetic. In any case, she’s very pleased with her purse and it’s contents.

Check out the fall colours too- they are perfect for the season. More colour options are available on the Flat Bags Etsy page so you will want to check there, or their Facebook, if you are looking for this purse. I love the Zippity Doo Da in Tamale- it’s such a statement piece!

This specific purse is not featured in this pattern on their website but, if you want to check out more of the fancy, fantastic Flat Bag fun visit the site here. Feel free to like this Facebook fanpage too, which is not shown on the website. You can access it via the My Domestic Dish fanpage as one of my “likes” and I’ve shared it there as well.

This one is a simple, single pocket with the same magnetic closures as the larger option. I think it is perfect for those ladies would would prefer to carry only a wallet but, like I do, have the nasty habit of sitting it down while shopping in stores and walking away from it. This way you can do the same thing but have it attached to your shoulder at all times. It would comfortably fit keys, sunglasses, a comb, a couple of make up basics, money and identification. Presently ours is housing an Oreo but, hey, a girl’s gotta eat.

Easy Peasy Patches- Review and How To

I started working with Easy Peasy Patches because a no sew fabric patch is fun, no matter what age you are. I figured that I would like using the item, while adding a bit of flair to my children’s clothing or accessories. I didn’t realize, however, how addicting the patching would become. There are just so many uses for no sew sticky patches and so many places that they look cute!

Disclaimer; This post is sponsored by Easy Peasy Patches. All opinions are, of course, my own and I was given the product in exchange for an unbiased review

I was sent 6 different no sew patches as part of my Easy Peasy review kit, which included 3 for a boy and 3 for a girl. Upon first inspection, they’re durable, come in appealing, bright colours and have a similar thickness to a denim (with a sticker back).
The usage explanation is pretty simple, really; You peel and stick. That’s it. As a busy Mama of four, I really enjoy having a quick, no-sew option for patching a torn knee, covering a stain on an expensive item that’s still got too much life to toss or just sprucing up a dull piece. They’re machine washable, no sewing is involved and you don’t have to iron anything- yet they’re not going to come off in the wash. You can throw them in the machine or, according to the website, even the dishwasher and they’re not going to peel or fray.

These are supposed to be a permanent patch and I can see why but I actually discovered that, if very careful, you can peel them off of one item and stick them on another. Once restuck, they stay in place just as well as they did upon original usage.

We had put “Filbert”, as my son named the little red monster face, onto Thing 1’s old backpack and had to switch him over when we got a new one. My son’s thrilled with his Easy Peasy patches and he’s already asked me for a friend for Filbert, to stick on his lunchbag. He’s reached the age where doing quirky, strange things is what’s “cool” and he thinks forcing friends to say hello to Filbert when they address him is just a riot. Kids. Heh.
If I could fill his entire bag with Filbert’s, I think Thing 1 would be thrilled.

For me though, it really comes down to price in the end. An awesome embellishment is all well and good but, if it’s going to break the bank, I may be able to do without. These, however, are incredibly affordable and you can find their craft kits on sale now for less than $12 via this link! The craft kit features five different patches, three bottles of paint in different colors, fabric glue and 100 different sequins.  You can’t go wrong and, if you’re interested, Jo Ann Fabrics or Wal Mart.com would be the place to check for the Easy Peasy line- their pricing is far more reasonable than what I pay for standard patches elsewhere, yet these are so much easier to use. Check out the video below to see how quick and easy they are to use.

That’s rain on his shirt, by the way. He’s not a dirty child! ūüėõ

Perfect Threads Online Clothing Shop

One of the best online clothing stores¬†that I have come across has been Perfect Threads, the company that¬†sponsored this review. ¬†As a mother, it’s not always easy for me to get out in the dead of winter, shopping for myself or the kids with all of them in tow. Sometimes, in order to avoid a fiasco in a store, I prefer to shop from the comfort of my home. It’s not always affordable to do, however, and that’s where second-hand¬†clothing stores like Perfect Threads come in.

Here, you can find a wide variety of used clothing online, including kids clothes, bargain clothing lots and women’s fashion. They’re close (to me), they’re affordable and they support area communities with fund-raising drives within the GTA.¬†Anyone who wishes to start¬†a drive with Perfect Threads is¬†able to contact their offices¬†via e-mail at info@PerfectThreads.ca and let¬†them know your cause, your deadline and the amount of money that you’re hoping to raise. They will create a custom campaign for you, coordinating plans in order to help you reach your charitable goals. They work with area schools, religious groups, sports teams and other social programs, then arrange to pick up their donations and pay you based upon weight obtained. This, on its own, greatly encouraged me to stick by the company but take a look at some of the items that I obtained for less than $25 in TOTAL;

Online Clothing Stores

This great coat was one of my finds and it came with the plastic attachment for tags still attached. I was shocked by the like-new quality of the item, looking as though it was never previously worn, and I’ve got to say I completely love it. I took it out in bitter cold (I’m from Canada, that to us is -15 kind of weather) and it stood up well. I like the versatility ¬†of the collar because, like any girl knows, sometimes you just ¬†have to hide a cold nose from a winter wind;

That feature was great, not to mention the belted waist and all of the pockets! For $10, I made the smartest buy of the year.

When doing some online shopping for clothing, you can never really tell whether or not the items are going to arrive true to size but, using a Canadian retailer, I knew that the outfits I ordered for my girls would fit them. As you can see, they look adorable and just loved their dresses. Pardon the one photo, it was taken during a family get-together that Peanut really wanted to sport her Elmo dress for so I took the opportunity to shoot it then.

best online clothing childrens clothing online

The middle picture above is the detailing from the sweater that I ordered from Perfect Threads. Sadly, my bust size made the shirt itself slightly short but I absolutely love the uniqueness of the piece. This picture doesn’t even do the beaded flowers justice and one of my favourite things about going thrift shopping is that these types of stores have the neatest clothing.

Service from Perfect Threads comes with¬†guarantees that most online retailers don’t, or even local shops that sell¬†used clothing¬†and I learned very quickly how much customer service can matter.¬†I initially ordered a few different shirts from the store, choosing mediums, and was accidentally sent smalls. I let the company know of the dilemma, expecting the standard response of “You can ship it back to us and we’ll exchange it, then reimburse you” or something along those lines, which is always a huge pain in the butt. As soon as I got the email back, I was shocked to discover that I was¬†quickly¬†provided with a store credit to rectify the situation and asked to donate the other items to a local charity shop. No fuss, fast service and great communication!

If you want to check out the store for yourself, please visit their Facebook page here and their website here. If you happen to place an order, I would truly appreciate you adding alysia@mydomesticdish.com to the comments box because referrals generate a store credit and you get a $10 credit for doing so! Be sure you pass on the word to friends and have them use your email address if they opt to make a purchase. This only counts for new customers, of course. Any order over $50 qualifies for free shipping- and that includes Canada! As a Canuck, I was overjoyed at this because most of the free shipping promises are for United States residence only but theirs applies to both countries. Bonus.
Happy shopping!

GlassesShop- and a discount for all!

I’m thinking my general theme for this past fortnight should be “eyes”.

As mentioned in my last post about the dragon contact lenses, I have received quite a few products that focus on the eye area lately, be those glasses, make up, creams or contacts. I’m not sure if the universe is attempting to force the realization upon me that I’m aging (thanks, universe-¬† duly noted), that my eyes need some TLC, or what exactly is up but this post is no exception. Brought to you, and me, by GlassesShop.com, I received the product at no cost in order to facilitate this review.
What’s cool about this particular post though, is that it involves a sweet discount code for all of my readers and my glasses are pink!

Glasses Shop Review

As you can see, these specs are pretty out there. That’s exactly what I was going for when I chose them from the site and, if they’re ¬†your cup of tea too, then you can find the product page here. At $20 a pop, they’re fantastic, discount eyeglasses and you can’t really go wrong.¬†The absolute best part of dealing with Glasses Shop, on top of that pricing, is the fact that single vision prescription lenses are included FOR FREE, along with their anti-scratch coating.

I had an eye appointment last week and discovered that I have so little pigment in the back of my eye that it explains why I am already losing colour in them. My eyesight is perfect but the eye itself is probably going to become a little albino-looking in the years to come. Fine with me, as I happen to think the whole vampire look is rather sexy. Well, some anyway;

In all seriousness though, I have to protect the pigment that I have left with polarized¬†sunglasses, whenever outside, all year round (I immediately wanted to start singing Sunglasses at Night by¬†Cory Hart when told this),and that can be pretty expensive. It adds up when, as any person might, I want to buy¬†a few different options¬†for those days when I feel I need a change.¬†I can’t do that if my glasses cost $300+ a piece; which, according to the insurance claim that I just put through for my sunglasses, would still be kinder pricing than I recently received.

Expensive Glasses Meme

I mean, let’s face it, some outfits pull together nicely with something so loud and then different occasions may require a more subtle, less distracting frame. I love being able to change things up once in a while and, even if I went with the¬†necessary polarized pair, or even a transitioning one, Glasses Shop beats out my local retailers’ pricing by a mile. I thought that was a fantastic bonus.

Speaking of bonuses, please use the discount code AlysiaX20 to receive a further 20% off on the website.¬†I’m not an affiliate of Glasses Shop, just a lady who likes to pass on some savings when possible. Enjoy!

Dragon Eyes Creepy Contact Lenses

It seems like I’m receiving more products to do with eyes, eye-wear and cosmetic eye changes lately. I can’t say that I’m complaining though, as they are the only feature that I like on my hot mess of a head.¬†I would like to thank Spooky Eyes for sending me these aqua dragon contact lenses free of charge, in order to facilitate this review.

Creepy, aren’t they?!

contact lenses aqua dragonI tried to make my eyes the main focus in this, so pardon my lack of eyebrows but I didn’t opt to dig them out or draw them back in after covering everything with powder, It’s a shame that I wasn’t sent vampire or zombie contact lenses, as I could have done the whole shebang with very little make up. My lack of sunshine does wonders for my skin but very little for its pallor. I own it.

I¬†put in my dragon eyes contact lenses while my husband was out with the kids so that I could get some pictures without an audience, or without a toddler hand in the frame. They like to ruin every one of my blog pictures with the world’s cutest photobombs. Well, when they got home I just went to greet everyone like normal and was met with mass hysteria, crying and panicked inquiries like, “Mummyyyy!! Why your eyes look like monsters?!

Clearly, they did the job.

dscf6959Who wouldn’t want to be greeted at the door by¬†these peepers?!

I did find that these contact lenses, like the Hulk Eyes lenses that I reviewed for Spooky Eyes previously, felt slightly thicker than other coloured¬†pairs¬†that I have worn. They were, however, easier to put in. I’m not sure if that was the lens itself or it was simply my lucky day but application was very simple. I also found that they were worn for a longer period of time than the others, without my eye drying too badly.
What was weird about these dragon eyes lenses was the fact that the black slit turned around on its own free will. This did add to the creepy aspect of things, as I was google-eyed half the time, but they did not stay put as they should have.

I would recommend Spooky Eyes contact lenses for any short period of wear but, for longer periods of time, I suggest purchasing some Visine for every couple of hours. If you like the Aqua Dragon look, you can find the product page here.

Sexy Specs-y; My Firmoo Eyewear Review

Disclaimer; Post contains affiliate links. I received my eyewear at no cost in exchange for writing an unbiased, honest review regarding my experiences with Firmoo.

If you enjoy this post, PLEASE vote for me in the blogger contest¬†here¬†on Firmoo’s website.
I was recently approached by Firmoo, in order to review a pair of their snazzy specs from their ever-changing website, and jumped at the opportunity to work with the business. Although my husband needs glasses and won’t admit it, no one in the household wears prescription lenses. Due to anxiety issues, as well as my penchant for stylishly covering dark Mama-circles under my eyes without the use of make up, I enjoy wearing a pair of non-prescription frames on a regular basis. I simply get clear sunglasses so that I never have to take them off and so my eyes always have a bit of UV protection. These suit that purpose, as well as give me a bit of flair at the same time;
I am a big fan of the cat eye shape, as well as the tortoise shell look that turns into a pop of turquoise. As you can see, the frames are a bit on the larger side and are made to be a statement piece. I have honestly never worn a pair of glasses that have gotten such reaction from people. I have been complemented on my new specs every time I’ve been out wearing them since they arrived;¬†while out of town to view some Christmas lights, out for a drink with my sister or even while grocery shopping. They came in a gorgeous, good quality case, that looks as though a map is printed on the outside and my husband actually stole that for his sun glasses because he liked it too. I also got a cleaning cloth, as well as a little glasses screwdriver with them and was very impressed with the company consideration. Shipping for these puppies was also exceptionally fast, with them arriving the very same week that I ordered;
The frames are affordable, the company communication is excellent, shipping is speedy and the site sales are fantastic. I absolutely love my Firmoo glasses and have received so much positive feedback about them that I will most definitely never shop anywhere else.

For those who wish to peruse the collection, it’s possible to even get a free pair of glasses here¬†if you use¬†the code FIRMOOFREE ¬†while checking out with selected style options. Be sure to browse their First Pair Free selections, or check out their buy one, get one free Christmas sale.

Kiss InstaWave Automatic Curler Review and Video

Thank God for the Keep It Simple, Stupid approach to curling with this hair tool that I received through BrandBacker to review, as I’m completely inept where these types of endeavors are concerned. Luckily enough, for my viewers and my locks, I had a relatively easy time of things with KISS Instawave Curler. You can find these awesome tools online at; http://www.KISSInstaWave.com

Alkemie Apparel; Raven Review

We have had nothing but garbage weather lately, with it raining for nearly a week solid and I took some indoor photos during that time as a result. I’m not sure how well they have turned out but I will let you be the judge, although I feel that the darker photos are fitting with this slightly darker-feeling fashion statement. Ladies and gents, meet Alkemie Apparel and the only bird that I am truly enjoying this Thanksgiving day;

This line up came about as a result of Stacie and Kenneth Randolph deciding that they would refuse to be ordinary, create a badass fashion line and clothe those who were looking for something different. That is exactly what transpired, as each piece is eye-catching, captivating and most are designed by the couple themselves. Many feature skulls, reference to tattoos and have the cult classics type of appeal but I think, overall, they just look damn cool. To me, they don’t scream any necessary type of style and I have worn mine with a black, knitted sweater, my ripped up jeans, my nicer pants, a leather coat or just a regular pair of blue jeans. It works for me, speaks to me and has quickly become one of my go-to shirts.

I had a difficult time choosing between all of the cameos offered, as I like so many, but I decided to go with the squid because of my Cthulhu tattoo. I opted for my necklace to match my feet, if it couldn’t match my shirt, and have been enjoying the piece with a variety of looks. Since checking out the site, Alkemie has launched a large quantity of new pendants, including a Marilyn Monroe one that I have added to my list for Santa. For the Nightmare Before Christmas lovers, you’ll want to check out the collection. You can view all of the necklaces here but this is an up close shot of the Inky one that I have been wearing;

The t-shirt that I am sporting is called, “The Raven”, for obvious reasons. I had to have this shirt the second that I saw it, due to my love of Poe and kickass attire. It is 100% combed, ring-spun cotton and is exceptionally soft, stretchy without spandex, and the fit is quite flattering. I have issues with some clinging too much to my midsection but this one sits on it nicely, without sucking straight to it and making me look heavier. I hate the belly button shadow that is so often present when I see ladies in the stores or streets but this t shirt is thicker and stays away from that area. The quality of the fabric, as well as the natural fibres, allow for a heavier shirt that breathes easily and would fit all kinds of body types in a flattering manner. The best point for me is the pricing, as everything offered by Alkemie is obtainable for any budget.

If you want to peruse some of the awesome weirdness, you can follow on Twitter, like them on Facebook or check out the Alkemie Apparel site.
To leave you with some food for thought, I derive inspiration from the author of The Raven;

There is no exquisite beauty‚Ķ without some strangeness in the proportion.

Echo-Echo-Echo Verde Fall Fashion

I came across Echo Verde while doing research for the blog, in an attempt to find eco-friendly fabrics that looked great, were more sustainable and were affordable. I’m cognizant of the environmental crisis that we sit upon the precipice of and realize the need for more earth conscious consumerism. That being said, I am also a mother of five, living on a single-income budget and I assume that I am not the only one who sacrifices a bit in the conscience department if it means saving some money.

With Echo Verde, the pricing isn’t outrageous but the clothing is.

echo verde review

I had one heck of a time getting photos for this post, as it was simply not my day where the camera was concerned so I do apologize for that. I have not done this incredibly comfortable sweater dress from the Echo Verde fall collection any justice but I’ll proudly sport it, all the same. The pieces focus on sensibility and soul, giving warmth to a wardrobe for chilly temperatures.
echo verde fall fashion
This is the hooded tunic sweater, in grey mix, and it’s comprised of cashmere and organic cotton. Can you get any nicer than that? Their fall collection would make even the most beach-loving mama pine for cooler temperatures and can be seen here. I would probably trade my left arm for their cape with the cowl, or the jersey knit, wide leg pants. More than just the clothing, I fell in love with the story of the company as well. Jane Nemis is the creator, who started the company in 2009 and wears every hat from designer and producer, to merchandiser. She is also incredibly nice, which makes dealing with a smaller operation far more personal and pleasurable than the big brands out there. Echo Verde is based in Vancouver, Canada and the name stems from the business practices and environmental approaches of one link in a chain impacting all of the others. The actions of one “echo” onward. Verde is Italian for green and serves as an homage to Jane’s grandmother, who taught her to sew. Leave it to the Canadians to be practical, with a multi-cultural influence, as well as incredibly sweet! I am almost as proud that the company is based here at home as I am to wear the gorgeous clothing, of which I will have another review posted about soon- so stay tuned!

My final thoughts about the attire;

The Echo Verde Hooded Tunic Sweater makes for a simple, yet very classy look for the afternoon. This is the kind of outfit that is effortlessly on point, being cool, casual and it is definitely one of my fall essentials. It easy morphs from a date night dress when paired with heels into a Mum-at-the-park outfit, when I swap the stilettos out for my high top mocs. It is simply charming and suitable for women of all ages and tastes, on top of being highly practical.

Check out Echo Verde for yourself via the website or join up on the Facebook page and say hi to Jane for me!

Holding onto spring with Echo Verde

Hey you! Nice to have you back. How are you liking this fall weather lately?
I absolutely love this time of year, with the exception of not being able to find a ton of colour in the seasonal attire. Don’t get me wrong, I love basic black (doesn’t every girl?!) but finding something other than a dreary palette, or wine red, is always a nice surprise. That’s why, for this post, I am holding onto spring colours and fashion with the Echo Verde line. I recently reviewed some fall garb by the company, which you can read about here, and mentioned how their collection gives warmth to a wardrobe for chilly temperatures. This specific outfit adds a splash of colour there as well;
I am presently sporting the staple of this particular assemblage in the cerise print, by way of the skirt that you see here. This piece works as the skirt shown above, a top, or as a sundress that you can wear with, or without, halter straps;
photos sourced from echoverde.com
I was not able to sport it as that beautiful lady did, due to my chest size causing me to look quite a bit heavier than I really am in the dress. There is a point to consider if you are a pattern-loving, busty lady but it definitely worked for me as a bottom and I enjoyed the ability to change the length, if I so desired. Talk about versatility-  and the skirt looks great with a variety of solids. You can see it worn at least four ways in the catalogue here, as well as peruse the variety of colours in which you can find the piece. This is a cotton and bamboo blend, meaning that it wicks away perspiration (not that sweating is an issue in this Canadian nippiness) and is a piece made entirely of certified organic fabrics. There is an addition of spandex, which amounts to 4%, in the top that I am wearing but all products are tested and chemical free so I can live with that.
Here is the outfit from the back and, as you can see, the spandex in the top pays off with a bit of a booty accentuation and helps bring out shape in the getup.
The jacket is my own addition, as well as the crazy boots, and I think they work well with the look but this would do just as well with cute ballerina flats, sandals or a simple pump. I had originally paired the ensemble with a cardigan but I felt that I looked a bit like a school teacher- which demonstrates that it will suit a variety of women, shapes and style preferences.
Once again, Echo Verde comes through with quality, sustainable, versatile products that are manufactured in an ethical way and still prove affordable for an average gal. Check out their site www.echoverde.com or visit them on Facebook for more information. You may want to get your own dose of spring before it’s too snowy for bitchin’ heels ūüėČ
